In Time for Earth Day, The Sanctuary Introduces Carbon Offsetting for Calculated Facility and Vehicle Emissions
Sacramento, Calif. – April 16, 2021: The Sanctuary, a locally-owned and operated licensed cannabis retailer and delivery service has become the first dispensary to utilize carbon offsetting via donation to California-based Carbon Offsets To Alleviate Poverty (COTAP). The dispensary hopes to lead by example and encourages other businesses in the cannabis supply chain to calculate their annual mileage and facility’s carbon footprints and support the fight against climate change.
Heidi Minx, CMO notes, “It’s no secret that packaging regulations, transportation requirements associated with testing and distribution, as well as indoor growing practices leave the industry in a less-than-desirable position in regards to carbon footprints and sustainability. California is viewed as a global leader when it comes to cannabis cultivation and innovation. We believe we should lead by example and COTAP’s particular approach to carbon offsetting appealed to us greatly — not only are they California-based, their work goes beyond just offsetting — they choose projects that support farmers and help ensure food security. As the industry as a whole looks to 4/20, we want to look two days later on the calendar — 4/22 is Earth Day, and this is our way of contributing year-round. From my research, I believe we are the first dispensary in California to calculate and offset our delivery vehicles’ and dispensary emissions.”
Tim Whitley, Founder + CEO of COTAP notes, “We’re thrilled that The Sanctuary recognized COTAP as their choice for carbon offsets; there’s way too much filler and shake in our industry in terms of forest carbon projects which only profess to “do no harm” to local communities. By contrast, our tagline is “global climate justice” because we’re all about who benefits (the world’s poorest people), how they benefit (direct sharing of carbon revenue), and how much (projects share 60%+). We’d love to help more cannabis companies and their customers follow The Sanctuary’s lead by addressing their unavoidable emissions through COTAP’s empowering offsets!”
ABOUT COTAP
Carbon Offsets To Alleviate Poverty (COTAP) is a California-based 501(c)3 nonprofit that funds projects around the world. Their mission is to empower individuals and organizations in developed countries to address both climate change and global poverty. COTAP counteracts carbon emissions through certified forestry projects in developing regions, creating transparent, accountable, and life-changing earnings for rural farming communities where income levels are less than $2 per day. Since 2011, COTAP has worked exclusively with projects certified by Plan Vivo, the world’s oldest voluntary forest carbon standard and the only standard which requires projects share 60%+ of carbon revenues with participating communities. COTAP’s long-standing efforts have funded small communities to plant trees and protect forests in Nicaragua, Mexico, Fiji, Indonesia, India, and Uganda. Ninety percent of the money given to the nonprofit goes directly into these programs with local farmers.
